Animals in Labs at UW
UW is the most federally-funded animal research facility in the country, receiving over $270 million last year from NIH. Concerned students and taxpayers think it's time we question the morality, validity, and fiscal responsibility of torturing animals in the name of science.
The University of Washington has long had an oppressive relationship with non-human animals, who are viewed simply as objects of scientific curiosity by UW administration and research staff. At any given time, the university holds captive over 16,000 animals, including 3,000 primates, out of view of the paying public and with no accountability for animal welfare or wasteful research practices.
UW also encompasses the Washington Regional Primate Research Center, which is the nation's most-funded animal research facility. The National Institutes of Health, the government body that provides funding for animal experimentation, provided UW over $270 million in federal taxpayer funding last year.
16,000 sentient lives and 270 million wasted taxpayer dollars every year... we think it's time to hold the University of Washington accountable for its cruel and wasteful practices.
